Amarillo Police arrested a 33-year-old man Wednesday
afternoon in connection with Tuesday's shooting death of
Sidney Joe Ward
The man remains in the Randall County Jail today
pending arraignment on a charge of murder, a Randall
County Jail spokesman said.
• Ward, who turned 27 Saturday, died at Northwest Tex-
as Hospital at 1:56 a.m. Tuesday, about an hour after be-
ing shot while visiting a friend at a small home behind
3800 S. Harrison St., according to an Amarillo Police De-
partment news release.
A man entered the house, shot Ward and left. Accord-
ing to a complaint filed in the Randall County District
clerk's office, Ward was shot twice in the chest with a
handgun.
After the shooting, Ward's friend drove him to the 300
block of South Fillmore Street and contacted a police offi-
cer. Ward then went by ambulance to NWTH.
A neighbor said the person police identified as Ward's
friend is a woman who moved into the rear house a few
weeks ago. The complaint states that a woman named
Cathy Gonzales was an eyewitness to the shooting.
Hudson said the suspect has lived in Amarillo for sev-
eral months but has no permanent address.
About noon Wednesday, officers went to where the
man was staying at the Inn of Amarillo, 601 W. Amarillo
Blvd., and asked him to come to the Amarillo Police De-
partment for questioning, said Sgt. Ron Hudson of the
Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit.
Investigators talked with the man and several other
people about the shooting, and then presented the case to
the Randall County Criminal District Attorney's Office,
which issued a warrant for the suspect's arrest.
Hudson said he still is investigating the motive, but
said Ward and the man apparently were acquainted, and
the shooting may stem from an old incident between them.
