Jason Tyler Fisher, 27, of Amarillo, died Feb. 26 after being stabbed at a Potter County intersection. Crystal Rose Roach, 18, was stabbed but survived.

UNSOLVED: Amarillo Man Stabbed to Death in 2003; Police Considered Possible Self-Defense

Jason Tyler Fisher was born on October 18, 1977. He was 25 years old when he was stabbed to death in Amarillo on February 26, 2003.^[1]

Fisher was attacked alongside his girlfriend, Crystal Roach. Both suffered multiple stab wounds, but Roach survived. Fisher died from his injuries, and his death was classified as a homicide.^[2]

The circumstances leading to the attack were difficult to establish. Investigators said Fisher and Roach had been accused of working together to target and rob older men whom Roach picked up. Police considered whether Roach may have met someone on the night of the stabbing and whether an attempted robbery or another encounter escalated into violence.

Detectives also examined the possibility that the unidentified assailant acted in self-defense. Potter-Randall Special Crimes Lt. Gary Trupe said investigators could not rule out the possibility that the man had been defending himself during an attempted robbery. Police questioned, however, why someone legitimately acting in self-defense would leave without reporting the stabbing.

Investigators emphasized that they could not prove Fisher was committing a crime when he was killed. Trupe acknowledged that Fisher could have been an innocent victim and that detectives did not have enough evidence to determine exactly what happened.

Police developed a description of a man they wanted to identify. He was described as a Hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old, standing approximately 5 feet, 6 inches to 6 feet tall and weighing around 240 pounds. He had a full beard, wore a T-shirt and dark pants, and reportedly drove a blue or green midsized car.^[3]

Roach recovered from her injuries and was later jailed on robbery charges. Public reports do not indicate that anyone was arrested or charged with Fisher’s killing.

Fisher was buried at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. More than two decades after his death, his case remains unsolved.
