Kharyi Nichols Killed During Argument in North Amarillo

Kharyi Terrell Nichols, 25, was fatally shot in north Amarillo on October 31, 2016. His first name was spelled “Kharyi” in contemporary police and news reports.

Police were called to the 3100 block of Oak Drive shortly before 1 p.m. Witnesses reported that Nichols and another man had been arguing outside a residence when gunshots were fired. Nichols was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle but died from his injuries.^[1]

Investigators identified 18-year-old Daviar Terrell Johnson as the other person allegedly involved. Johnson was located in the 5500 block of Southwest 34th Avenue and arrested two days after the shooting. He was not initially charged with killing Nichols; instead, he was booked on a Potter County warrant for tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair. His bond was set at $100,000.^[2]

The Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit said it planned to present the case to a grand jury. Available news coverage does not document the grand jury’s decision or show that anyone was subsequently convicted of Nichols’ death.^[3]
