Officials disclose few details about death

The Moore County Sheriff's Office has booked a 47-year-old man into the Moore County jail on a murder charge in connection with a Saturday night death, officials said.

Alan Ray Kuykendall is accused in the shooting death of his wife, Aimee Kuykendall, who died about 10:35 p.m., sheriff's officials said in a news release. Investigators released few details about the alleged crime.

If convicted of murder, a first-degree felony, Ray Kuykendall faces five to 99 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Jail officials said Kuykendall was arraigned Sunday, but would not disclose if a judge set a bond in the case.

The incident remained under investigation Sunday by the sheriff's office and Texas Rangers, officials said.

Woman on phone with friend when shot, killed

A Dumas woman fatally shot Saturday was talking on the phone with a friend from Fort Worth at the time of the shooting, investigators said Monday.

Aimee Kuykendall, 32, was arguing with her husband, Alan Ray Kuykendall, about 10:35 p.m. Saturday in their rural Moore County home, investigators said.

Deputies arrested Alan Kuykendall, a 47-year-old truck driver, and booked him into the Moore County jail on a murder charge. A judge set bond for Kuykendall at $1 million, officials said. He remained in jail late Monday.

The friend heard a shot and called 911, but it was too late, authorities said. Before deputies could reach the home at 10826 McClary St., Aimee Kuykendall was dead, investigators said.

Investigators recovered a .38-caliber handgun at the scene they think was used in the shooting, Chief Deputy Carmen Napp said.

The couple had two children younger than 5, Napp said. The children were with family Monday, Napp said.

Napp would not disclose how many times Aimee Kuykendall had been shot or whether investigators have determined a motive for the crime.

Investigators said they would know more about the circumstances after they got results from an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday in Lubbock.

"Our Lt. Morgan Hightower will go down with a Texas Ranger to witness the autopsy," Napp said. "(Texas Rangers) have a little better resources than we do."^[1]

Autopsy: Dumas woman shot 3 times

Preliminary results of an autopsy conducted Tuesday revealed the Dumas woman fatally shot Saturday suffered three gunshot wounds, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said.

Aimee Kuykendall, 32, had been arguing with her husband, Alan Ray Kuykendall, about 10:35 p.m. Saturday in their home at 10826 McClary St. when the shooting occurred, investigators said.

Aimee Kuykendall was on the phone with a friend when the friend heard a shot, investigators said. Deputies arrested Alan Kuykendall and booked him into Moore County jail on a murder charge. Investigators recovered a .38-caliber handgun at the scene.

Kuykendall remained in jail Monday on $1 million bond.^[2]

Dumas man sentenced to 45 years for killing wife

A 47-year-old Dumas truck driver was sentenced to 45 years in prison Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his wife at their rural Moore County home in January.^[3]

Authorities arrested Alan Ray Kuykendall on Jan. 14 after the shooting death of his wife, Amie Kuykendall, 32, in their home at 10826 McClary St., 69th District Attorney David Green said.

Judge Ronald E. Enns also ordered Alan Kuykendall to pay a $5,000 fine, Green said.

On Jan. 14, after a domestic argument, Amie Kuykendall told her husband she was going to leave him and take their two children, who were younger than 5 at the time, Green said.

Alan Kuykendall, who had been drinking, took a .38-caliber revolver from his bedroom closet and placed it on the kitchen counter, Green said.

The couple continued to argue, and Alan Kuykendall grabbed the revolver and shot his wife six times, which killed her immediately, Green said.

On the murder charge, Alan Kuykendall faced a maximum sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison.

The Moore County Sheriff's Department had previously responded to two domestic complaints at the home, both on the same day, Chief Deputy Carmen Napp said in January.

When deputies arrived both times, one of the two had already left the scene, and the incidents were not physical, Napp said. Authorities did not reveal the date of the complaints.
