Ryan Garcia
Ryan Garcia’s 2008 Death Remains an Unsolved Amarillo Mystery

Ryan Garcia disappeared around Christmas Eve 2007. More than three months later, the 22-year-old Amarillo man was found dead in a drainage culvert near Givens Road, but the condition of his remains prevented authorities from determining how he died.
Garcia’s family reported him missing in January 2008, although police later said he had last been seen around December 24. Investigators sought information about where he went and whom he may have encountered during the Christmas holiday.[1]
On April 5, 2008, Garcia’s unclothed body was discovered near Givens Road, off the Dumas Highway north of Amarillo. His remains were badly decomposed and had been disturbed by animals.[2]
The advanced decomposition prevented the medical examiner from establishing a cause of death. Investigators also could not determine why Garcia was at the isolated location or whether he died there and was later exposed, or whether someone placed his body in the culvert.[3]
Authorities treated the death as suspicious, but the absence of a confirmed cause left them unable to officially establish exactly what happened. Detectives followed numerous leads over the following years without identifying anyone responsible.
Garcia’s death brought renewed trauma to a family that had already experienced another violent loss. According to Potter-Randall Special Crimes Lt. Gary Trupe, Garcia’s maternal grandmother had previously disappeared and was later found murdered in Albuquerque after allegedly being abducted from an Amarillo motel. That case had also remained unresolved for years.
NewsChannel 10 reported in 2012 that police were still seeking information about Garcia’s disappearance and death. A 2015 review of Amarillo’s unsolved cases again listed the investigation as unresolved.
Garcia’s case remains open, but it is best described as a suspicious death rather than a confirmed homicide because authorities have never publicly established his cause or manner of death.
Anyone with information about Garcia’s activities around Christmas 2007 or how his body reached the Givens Road area may contact the Amarillo Police Department Cold Case Unit at 806-378-6468. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 806-374-4400.
