Amarillo police are investigating after an attempted murder-suicide left a man dead and sent a woman to a local hospital in life threatening condition.^[1]

Attempted Murder-Suicide – Belpree Road Townhouse

An attempted murder-suicide occurred on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2015, at a townhouse in west Amarillo, resulting in one death and one person hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Incident

At approximately 6:30 a.m., police responded to a residence at 6215 Belpree Road, just south of Interstate 40 between Coulter and Bell streets. According to Lt. Erick Bohannon, coordinator of the Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit, officers found Stacy Edward Burns, 52, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and an unidentified woman suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Investigators determined that Burns shot the woman and then turned the gun on himself. The woman was able to place a call to 911, alerting authorities to the incident.

Scene

The residence is located on a cul-de-sac on Belpree Road, where neat brick townhouses line the street. Some neighbors walked to the police barricade to see what was going on before heading off to work. Several appeared dismayed upon hearing the news.

Brad Jeter, who had lived next door to the townhouse for five years, said he didn't know Burns or the woman but was shocked when he awoke Tuesday to find the neighborhood filled with police and emergency lights.

"It's the first time anything like this has happened here. It's a quiet neighborhood… this is surprising," he said.

Investigation

The case was under investigation by the Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit. Police asked anyone with information on the shooting to contact the unit at 806-378-9468.

The identity of the female victim was not released.
