Special Crimes investigates suspicious Amarillo death

Preliminary autopsy results show that a 37-year-old man whose body was found in a ditch Thursday died from what police said could be an assault, authorities said.

About 2 a.m. Thursday, Potter County sheriff’s deputies found Clay Petersen’s body in a ditch at 1800 North Smelter Road, Sgt. Eric Smith said.

The Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit will continue to investigate Petersen’s death as a homicide, police said.

Police: Man found in ditch may be homicide victim

An Amarillo man who was found dead in a ditch on Thursday had injuries sustained from a possible assault, authorities said.^[1]

Potter County deputies found Clay O’Brian Petersen’s body about 2 a.m. Thursday in a ditch at 1800 N. Smelter Road. The Potter-Randall Counties Special Crimes Unit continues to investigate the 37-year-old’s death as a possible homicide, police said.

Special Crimes Sgt. Eric Smith would not discuss the victim’s injuries or elaborate on the autopsy results.

Petersen worked at Turner Brothers Crane, according to his obituary.
