Amarillo police captain arrested over alleged disclosure of intimate photographs

AMARILLO, Texas — An Amarillo police captain was arrested and placed on administrative leave after being accused of sharing a woman’s private photographs without her consent.^[1]

Capt. Jason Zang, 57, was arrested on March 15, 2019, on a charge of unlawful disclosure or promotion of intimate visual material. The arrest followed a complaint filed on March 7.

According to documents filed by prosecutors, Zang met the woman through Craigslist and the two began a romantic relationship. The woman reportedly sent him nude photographs intended only for his private viewing.

When she later attempted to end the relationship, prosecutors alleged that Zang continued contacting her and shared the photographs with other people.

Zang was booked into the Potter County Detention Center with a recommended bond of $7,500.

The Texas Rangers and Amarillo police detectives were assigned to the criminal investigation. The department also placed Zang on administrative leave pending the outcome of a separate internal investigation.

Police Chief Ed Drain emphasized that Zang had been charged but not convicted and remained entitled to due process in both proceedings. Drain said the allegations, if proven, would be disappointing and damaging to the reputation of law enforcement.

Zang had worked for the Amarillo Police Department since 1990 and was assigned to its Service Division at the time of his arrest.
