Man dead after early morning shooting in Southwest Amarillo

On July 28, 2020, around 3:35 a.m., Amarillo police officers were called to Southwest 27th Avenue and Britain Drive for shots fired.

When they arrived to the scenem they found 31-year-old Tremain Haynes dead in the parking lot. Police said he had suffered several gunshot wounds to his body.^[1]

5 years later, Amarillo man to face murder charge in 2020 shooting

An indictment for a suspect was filed on October 2022. However, it was not unsealed until September 2025.

Xylon Trent Martin was booked into the Potter County Dentention Center in early September 2025 on the charge of murder. His bond was set at $500,000.

The significant gap in time between the date of Haynes' murder and Martin's indictment is due to Martin being in prison for an offense that happened shortly after the murder.

On Aug. 13, 2020, the Randall County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team went to a home at 4212 Garland to execute a search warrant. During the search, one of the bedroom doors had a “shotgun booby trap” set up to go off when the door was opened, according to officials.^[2]

The trap went off, missing two SWAT officers “by inches”, according to an RCSO release.

The men arrested were identified as 24-year-old Brenton Tucker and 21-year-old Xylon Martin.

Martin was charged with three counts of theft of firearm, a count of fraud, and a count of drug possession.

He was convicted and sentenced to serve five years in prison in May 2021, well over a year before the murder indictment was filed in Potter County.
