On April 21, 2019, around 9:37 p.m., Amarillo police were called out to a rollover crash on the Dumas Highway.
A 17-year-old man was driving a 2017 Corvette with two passengers when he lost control, left the road, hit a light pole, slid along the guardrail and drove off the Hastings Avenue overpass. He careened up the embankment, hitting the bottom of the southbound overpass before the car came to a halt.[1]
His passenger, 17-year-old Andrea Elizalde, died on the scene.
The 22-year-old male passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries.
The 17-year-old driver, identified as Joe Lawrence Rivera, received. non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
Speed and alcohol were determined to be contributing factors in the crash.
March 11, 2020 Arrest of Rivera

On March 11, 2020, Amarillo police arrested Rivera on warrants for the fatal crash. He was booked into Potter County Detention Center for intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault
Lawrence died several months later from head injuries sustained in a fight.
