UPDATE: Detectives identify victim of deadly Bell Street shooting

Dylan Mims, 20, was arrested on a charge of manslaughter from the scene after a September 29, 2021 shooting on Bell Street that killed one person.

Thursday afternoon, Amarillo Police Department Homicide Detectives identified the victim as 22-year-old Ladarius Eugene Johnson.

According to the Amarillo Police Department (APD), officers responded to an apartment on the 1500 block of Bell Street Sept. 29 at around 7:20 p.m. after reports of a shooting. One person, Johnson, was found shot at the scene and taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Police reported detectives spoke to witnesses who had been inside the apartment at the time of the shooting and identified Mims, who was still on the scene, as a suspect. Mims was arrested and booked into the Potter County Detention Center.[1]

Dylan Tyler Mims, 23, was sentenced Monday to five years in prison and a $500 fine.

According to court records, police responded to the Axiom at Bell apartment complex on September 29, 2021.

They found Ladarius Eugene Johnson, 22, who had been shot inside an apartment.

Johnson was taken to the hospital where he died from two gun shots to the face.

Police spoke to three people in the courtyard of the apartment complex. All three had blood on them.

Mims said he accidentally shot Johnson while playing with a handgun.

Their other roommate did not say it was an accident. Instead, he said Mims "pointed (the gun) at Johnson when it went off."

The third person claimed he was in the shower at the time of the shooting.[2]
