Murder on North Fairmont Street – Haley Sue Green Stabbing

The Amarillo Police Department is investigating a murder that took place on North Fairmont Street in Amarillo.^[1]

The Incident

According to APD, on Friday night, officers were dispatched to 107 N. Fairmont on the report of a stabbing. Officers arrived at 9:43 p.m. and found Haley Sue Green, 22, suffering from stab wounds. The suspect had left the scene.^[2]

Green later died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

While officers were at the scene of the stabbing, a report came in regarding a possible robbery in progress in the 300 block of Bellview. Patrol officers and K-9 units responded and found Mark Christopher Ahrens, 32, in the yard of the residence. Ahrens immediately ran from officers but was caught. Ahrens resisted arrest and punched an officer but was taken into custody. Following his arrest, Ahrens was identified as the suspect in the stabbing.

Ahrens was placed under arrest for Murder, Evading Arrest or Detention, and Assault on a Public Servant. He was booked into the Potter County Detention Center.

Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones has ordered an autopsy.

Investigation Details

The stabbing, at 107 N. Fairmont St. near San Jacinto Park, was reported to the APD at 9:41 p.m., according to a department news release. When officers arrived, they found Haley Sue Green, 22, suffering from stab wounds. She later died at the scene.

The suspect, Mark Christopher Ahrens, 32, was later apprehended nearby in a residential yard on Bellview Street. Ahrens initially ran and resisted arrest, punching an officer in the face in the process, but was ultimately taken into custody.

Ahrens was booked into the Potter County Jail on multiple charges—murder, evading arrest, and assault on a public servant.

Court and Sentencing

The initial complaint said a witness told police Ahrens came to their home in the 100 block of North Fairmont and began stabbing Green. Police say they found wounds to her face and neck, as well as defensive wounds on her hands and arms.^[3]

Police later found a bloody knife under the deck in the backyard of the home.

Ahrens was eventually found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 45 years in prison.
