Man arrested after Amarillo man dies at shooting in west Amarillo

On January 19 at 6:52 p.m., APD officers were dispatched to a traffic accident at the intersection of Southwest 1st Avenue and South Bonham Street.[1]

Police say 48-year-old Rodney Curtis Ward was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body in his vehicle. Ward was transported to the hospital with a life-threatening injury.

That evening, detectives who were investigating the case arrested 15-year-old in connection with the shooting.

On Jan. 21, Ward died from his injuries.

On Jan. 22, APD SWAT officers assisted the Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit in conducting a search warrant at two homes near south of Austin Street.

Police arrested 18-year-old Edward Matthew Gamez for the death of Ward.

Gamez was booked into Potter County Jail for murder.

June 12, 2023 Sentencing

On June 12, 2023, a Potter County Jury sentenced Gamez to 7 years at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
