DETAILS: On Monday, June 20, 2022, at 7:02pm, Potter County deputies and Amarillo Police officers encountered two suspects running from a stolen pickup. One suspect was armed with a handgun. He was later identified as Johnny Allen, male, birthdate 09/21/1985. Allen broke into a residence in the 1900 block of N. Adams. The second suspect, Jerome Snyder, male, birthdate 05/18/1982, was located in the area and taken into custody. The APD Critical Incident Response Team was called out at approximately 7:49pm.
Officers learned that there were two women inside the home where Allen had broken in. Allen refused to come out of the house and would not allow the women to leave. Negotiators were able to establish communication with the suspect and talked with one of the victims. After several hours, the suspect agreed to come out, but then tried to steal the victim’s car and escape from the garage. SWAT was prepared for this and immediately entered the home to stop the suspect. The two victims were rescued inside the residence and were not injured. Johnny Allen was booked into the Potter County Detention Center for Aggravated Assault Deadly Weapon/Public Servant, 2 counts of Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Robbery, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Evading Arrest. Jerome Snyder was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail for Evading.
Several residents nearby had to leave their homes for safety during this incident. The Amarillo Police Department would like to thank the neighbors, friends, and family for their patience and cooperation while this incident was being worked. We are also thankful for the bravery and poise displayed by the victims of this inexcusable crime.
The APD Violent Crimes Unit is investigating this incident.
Police identify man they say held 2 women hostage for hours
Amarillo police identified the man they said held two women hostage for hours.[1]
Johnny Allen, 36, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/public servant, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and evading arrest.
Police said it all started around 7 p.m. when they tried to make a traffic stop on a stolen pickup.
Allen, who police said was armed with a gun, hopped out of the truck and ran into a home in the 1900 block of N. Adams Street.
A second suspect in the truck, Jerome Snyder, 40, was arrested and charged with evading arrest.
Police learned there were two women inside the home. Allen refused to come out and would not let the women leave.
SWAT team negotiators were able to establish communication with Allen and talked with one of the victims.
Around 11:30 p.m., Allen agreed to come out, but instead tried to steal a car from the garage, according to police.
SWAT immediately entered the home and arrested Allen.
The two hostages were rescued. Police said they were not injured.
According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Allen was sentenced in 2016 to five years in prison for burglary of a habitation and 16 months for theft of property.
He served eight months before being paroled in June 2017.
