Damon Landon Messer Fatally Shot in Amarillo Church Parking Lot

Damon Landon Messer, 41, was shot and killed outside an Amarillo church on February 13, 2019. Available public reporting does not indicate that anyone was arrested or charged in connection with his death.

At approximately 7:10 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a disorderly-conduct call at Family Life Church near Southwest 58th Avenue. Investigators said Messer and another man had been arguing in the church parking lot when the shooting occurred.[1]

Messer was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound. Justice of the Peace Kyle Balke ordered an autopsy in Lubbock, while the Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit investigated what caused the confrontation.[2]

Police did not publicly identify the other man, announce a motive or explain whether investigators believed the shooting was intentional or committed in self-defense. Local organization Stop the Rage later held a benefit to help Messer’s family with funeral expenses.[3]
