Murder of Miranda Nicole Zimmerman
The murder of Miranda Nicole Zimmerman occurred during the early morning of March 4, 2013, inside Room 229 of the Luxury Inn and Suites at 2915 East Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas. Zimmerman, a 20-year-old Arizona resident, died from blunt-force injuries to her upper body.
Her husband, Matthew Ivan Zimmerman, then 31, reported her death and was arrested at the motel shortly afterward. He was indicted for murder and remained confined in the Potter County Detention Center while the case was pending for more than 11 years. Zimmerman accepted a plea agreement in May 2024 and received a 15-year prison sentence with credit for time already served.
Death of Miranda Zimmerman
At approximately 2:10 a.m. on March 4, 2013, Amarillo emergency dispatchers received a telephone call from a man reporting that a woman might be dead inside Room 229 of the Luxury Inn and Suites.
Police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to the motel and found a white woman dead inside the room. The man who placed the call was no longer there when responders arrived.
Evidence inside the room led officers to suspect that the death resulted from foul play. The Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Uniformed officers subsequently saw a man in the motel parking lot and detained him. Investigators determined that he was Matthew Zimmerman, the person who had reported the body. Zimmerman was arrested and booked into the Potter County Correctional Center on a murder charge.
Identification and autopsy
The victim was identified as Miranda Nicole Zimmerman, 20, of Arizona. Amarillo police initially reported that they believed she and Matthew Zimmerman were married.
Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones ordered an autopsy, which was conducted in Lubbock on March 5. Preliminary findings showed that Miranda died from blunt-force trauma to her upper body.
Later court records alleged that Matthew Zimmerman caused her death by striking her with an unknown object, strangling her, or using a combination of those actions.
Indictment
A Potter County grand jury indicted Zimmerman for murder in 2013. The case was assigned cause number 066833-00-E in Potter County’s 108th District Court.
The indictment alleged that Zimmerman intentionally or knowingly caused Miranda’s death by:
- Striking her with an object whose precise nature was unknown;
- Strangling her; or
- Employing both forms of assault.
Zimmerman was initially held in the Potter County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.
Lengthy pretrial confinement
Zimmerman’s murder prosecution remained unresolved for more than a decade. Potter County court schedules continued to list him as a jail inmate awaiting disposition of the murder charge as late as April 2024.
By February 2024, Zimmerman had been confined for nearly 11 years without a final disposition in the murder case. That month, while incarcerated in the Potter County Detention Center, he filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit against the detention center.
Zimmerman subsequently asked the federal court to appoint an attorney or permit him to withdraw the lawsuit. A federal magistrate recommended denying the request for counsel and treating his alternative request as a voluntary dismissal. On April 17, 2024, U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice.
Plea and sentence
On May 1, 2024, Zimmerman accepted a plea agreement resolving the murder prosecution. Available incarceration records identify his resulting sentence as 15 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Zimmerman received credit toward the sentence for the approximately 11 years he had already spent in the Potter County Detention Center. He was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and assigned inmate number 02502172.
Because of the time-served credit, a substantial portion of the 15-year sentence had already been completed when Zimmerman entered state prison.
