Intoxication manslaughter charge in death of Shelby Danielle Clark

Shelby Danielle Clark, 20, died after a pickup truck she was riding in left the roadway and struck a tree in the 8100 block of Southwest 34th Avenue on January 11. The driver, Nicholas Mergele Nolley, 27, of Amarillo, was later charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with her death.

The crash

On January 11, Clark was a passenger in a 2001 Dodge pickup truck traveling east on Southwest 34th Avenue when the driver, Nolley, lost control of the vehicle. The truck left the roadway and hit a tree in the 8100 block. Nolley had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. Clark died as a result of the collision.

Charge filed

The Randall County District Attorney's Office accepted an intoxication manslaughter charge against Nolley after the Amarillo Police Department's Traffic Investigation Squad presented its findings. Nolley was arrested in the Fort Worth area and booked into the Tarrant County Jail. As of the report, he remained in custody in lieu of $50,000 bond, according to jail records.

APD said it was working with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to determine where Nolley had purchased the alcohol he consumed before the crash.
