June 19, 2022 - Deadly crash near Canyon

On June 19, 2022, Canyon police responded to an early morning crash.[1]

Upon arrival, they learned that 19-year-old Trent Wood was driving a truck with 16-year-old Clayton Anderson as his passenger.

Near the 24000 block of U.S. 87, the truck left the road and hit a tree near the 2nd Roadside Park in Canyon.

Anderson died at the scene, while Wood was taken to the hospital "life-threatening" injuries, according to police.

August 24, 2022 - Indictment

Wood was indicted by a Randall County grand jury on one count of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.

According to the criminal complaint, Woods was going 70 mph when his pickup hit a tree near the "2nd Roadside Park" on US 87 and there were no skid marks.

His passenger, 16-year-old Clayton Harold Anderson, was killed in the crash.

Wood was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The criminal complaint filed for Wood states that multiple witnesses told police they saw Wood "consume alcohol at a bar and at a house party after the bar closed."

Police said his BAC two hours after the crash was .064.

February 27, 2024

On June 19, 2022 Trent Lee Wood was driving a truck in the 24000 block of U.S.87 with a passenger, 16-year-old Clayton Anderson. The truck left the road and collided with a tree near the 2nd Roadside Park in Canyon, Texas.

Wood sustained non-life threatening injuries while his 16-year-old passenger was declared deceased on the scene.

Wood pled guilty a charge of manslaughter on February 27, 2024 ad adjudication was put aside for 10 years.

Clayton Anderson

The deceased 16-year-old, Clayton Anderson, was a rodeo champion who had won numerous awards.

Two weeks before the crash, Anderson won Reserve Champion in Reined Cow Horse at the Texas High School Rodeo Association state finals.

He was scheduled to compete at nationals in July. The team competed in Anderson's memory.

"Team Texas took the SEVENTH National Win at the NHSRA Finals, and all of our contestants did it in memory of one of our own," said the THSRA.[2]

Anderson was a member of the Region 1 Texas Junior High School Rodeo Association, competing in Steer Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping and Team Roping qualifying for Nationals 2018, 2019 and 2020.

In 2020, he won the Texas Junior High Rodeo Champion Steer Saddle Bronc Riding.
